White Americans Aren’t Racists

How’s that for a bold title?

I got to thinking about the perpetuation of racial tension in the US. Frankly, 98% of white Americans don’t think about racism or “black” vs “white” at ALL in their daily lives. I just don’t think about it. When I see a black person, I don’t think “ooh, a black person.” In fact, at least here in Johnson County, when I see a black person he or she is always in a nice suit and driving a nicer car than me. There’s nobody being “kept down” around here.

But whenever black Americans pull the race card, there’s always a backlash from white America that says “Hey man, there’s no racism anymore – you all are the only ones talking about race.”

And that’s really true. It gets back to my point about almost all white Americans NEVER thinking about race. But here’s what really struck me recently.

It makes me angry when black Americans blame white Americans for their problems, or for the state of the black community today. And guess what, it’s not because I think white Americans didn’t mistreat black Americans in the past, and perhaps in some cases still today.

I get mad, because it wasn’t me. It isn’t me. I am being blamed for something I had nothing to do with whatsoever. I wasn’t alive, nor were my parents or grandparents. None of us had anything to do with slavery, yet here we are, 150 years after the end of slavery, with black Americans still blaming us for their problems, even though we weren’t there or involved in any way. And let’s get real, the black Americans moaning about racism and slavery weren’t alive then, either. Black Americans born after the 1960’s haven’t even seen the same level of racism that their parents saw. So what in the Sam Hill are they talking about.

Let’s put this into some perspective. If someone with a Honda ran over your mom and maimed her, would you insist that the Honda Corporation apologize and pay reparations? Would you demand that all Honda owners pay up? Would you hate them for being Honda owners, since a Honda owner maimed your mom?

The majority of black Americans today did NOT descend from slave families. More than half of black Americans either immigrated here AFTER slavery was abolished, or didn’t even come from Africa in the first place.

So there you have it. I’m OFFENDED by allegations that I’ve somehow ruined an entire race’s life by being a white dude. It’s an outrageous thing to claim, and to the 60% of black Americans who didn’t descend from slaves – you REALLY need to shut the eff up and stop trying to benefit from the suffering of others long dead.

I completely agree. Which reminds me, have you ever heard that Ben Lee song “Rockin’ the Suburbs”? Because he definitely mentions that issue.

While we’re at it, could we PLEASE drop the phrase “African-American”, you’re no more African than I am. As a matter of fact, one of my doctors IS from South Africa and he is 100% white — which would actually make him African-American if he felt the need to classify himself as such. (My wonderful dentist is black in case anybody cares.) While I’m at it, can we get the white comedians to go back to being politically incorrect and not afraid to joke about the silly differences between the races? Why is it OK for all the black comedians to make fun of white people? and WHAT is with the “white guy voice” that they uniformly employ, I don’t know ANYBODY who sounds like that.

    sincerely, the Uppity Cracker

    What you don’t know…

    – You don’t know what it’s like to be conscious of or be reminded about your race almost every day

    – You don’t know that even if it is true that 98% of White America is not racist (which many people feel is a huge stretch) the 2% who are more than make up for the 98% who aren’t.

First off, let me say that I’ve never blamed any group for anything (Except maybe those damn dirty Canadians). In fact I most certainly wouldn’t be anywhere close to where I am today if it weren’t for several very caring, very loving very positive white men and women who have done some amazing things in my life. If anything I come from the Bill Cosby school of “Wake up Black People!”

    However…

Even with that said, I can tell you with 174.2% certainty that racism still occurs everyday and when it occurs it brings incredible pain and misery. And until you’ve seen it, felt it and experienced the devestation and family destruction that comes with it, you can’t fully understand or appreciate it.

When black folks (for lack of a better term I’m personally not fond of any of them, black is a color and I know I’m far less African than my white friend’s wife who actually IS from South Africa but no one ever refers to her as African-America… alas I digress) speak of being treated unfairly most of them (us) are not refering to what happened in 1865 but what happened in 1965 and 1975 and 1985 and still occurs today. Many black families have a not so distant relative, a cousin, uncle, grandfather, mother, father or friend who was actively targeted for unspeakable violent acts due exclusively to the color of his or her skin.

All this to say, I don’t blame you personally Incredipeter nor would most thinking people, but when there is systemic violence intensely perpetuated from one ethnicity, who happens to be the majority against another ethnicity, who happens to be the minority it doesn’t take much to cause substantial and long lasting destruction.

I will leave with this. Why is it that when I innocently forgot to renew the registration for my car I was pulled over 3 times in two days ONLY for the registration, I wasn’t speeding, driving recklessly, or committing any violation whatsoever. What about me, a 30-something man driving a 10 year old (but still in good condition) Honda Accord, screamed, run his license plates?

Just one of those things that makes you go hmmm…
(and yes all 3 officers appeared to be Canadian, damn dirty Canucks)

Ah, HRT – you did not disappoint. I knew you’d have something to say about this post.

I think you latched on quickly to the irony I was attempting to weave with that post – the irony that I am offended at being “lumped in” arbitrarily with a group – the same that you feel I’m sure, just coming from opposite ends of the spectrum.

I think we can all agree that the 2% of white racists I speak of are the police and the people who live in West Virginia.

I was also awaiting HRT’s response with baited breath (but I couldn’t resist eating the cheese) simply because he is smart and witty and educated and I knew he’d have an interesting comment. I can’t remember where you live, HRT, but I can assure you that in cities like L.A. and Houston, being black is NOT a “minority” … nor is being Hispanic, or Asian-Indian, or Asian. I can also attest to being on the receiving end of racism due to my being white. It still confuses me that we white folks are NOT the “people of colour”. When we are embarassed we turn red; when cold we turn blue; when seasick we turn green; we tan brown; and if we get jaundice then we turn yellow!!!

“Though many definitions exist, there appears to be no established agreement on any scientific definition of race. What we do find though, is the general belief among the scientific community that race has no biological or natural basis and that the “race” related physical variations found in humans have no real significance…” (http://www.culturediversity.org/what%20is%20race.htm)

Therefore, if race does not exist, by extension, racism is a farcical concept; hence, racists are merely a figment of our collective imaginations. Consequently, there is no such thing as race, Incredipete was right Americans are not racist, because there is no such thing! Wow, Incredipete you really are smart!

I can honestly say that I think of racisim on a daily basis. It has nothing to do with me liking, or disliking the black population in general and much more to do with the fact that while I went to an elementary school where there were 5 blacks to every white, and had many black friends, my daughter has been beat up on the playground at the apparments we live in 3 times since we moved in less than a month ago by 2 black children.

I have all the respect in the world for someone, any one of any color, who when confronted about a problem acts like an adult. But when I confront a childs mother about her son slapping my daughter in the face and the response I get is “Your daughter started it because my son is black, and I don’t have to take this shit because you’re white and just out to get me” (not an exact quote, but you get the point) I loose all respect.

So yes, I think about racisim because at 6 years old, my daughter is already experiancing it from the other side of things. I understand that it’s a person to person thing, and I am certainly not trying to target an entire race. But it does happen on an opposite side, even if the world would like to try to deny it.

Incredipete, I don’t think it’s going to surprise you that I totally disagree with you. I have relatives that openly practice their racism every day, and they’re (ignorantly) proud of it.

I have a knitting friend who is black, and we went to this snooty yarn store, and the cashier followed her every where she went, but never followed me. I’ve seen that lots of times.

    Also, happy birthday. 🙂

Are you sure they aren’t following your friend around to make sure she can find what she’s looking for? It’s a fine line between outstanding customer service and ignorant profiling.

    I kid, of course.

I just wish everyone would listen to me on the race issue.

We need to keep fucking until there is just one color!

Will you silly fuckers not listen? What will we do when the frakking aliens show up? HUH?? What then you ignorant slack assed fools!
