We’re Too Good

In a rare moment of mental clarity, I have determined our number one problem as a society.

See, in World War II, we were tough. We stormed the beaches, sacrificed our boys, and we won the war. The price was extremely high, but still we stayed with it. No one in America thought we were being mean, or that we shouldn’t kill civilians in the process. We were justified.

I used to think this was just a difference in generation… society churning out sissies instead of patriots. But, in my moment of clarity, I realized that the “Greatest” generation is no “greater” than the generations that followed… the ones that lost Korea, Vietnam, and in reality, Iraq, and now the war on terror.

Our technology and weaponry is too good.

That’s it. That’s my brilliant insight. Now, let me expound.

In World War II, and really in all previous wars through recorded history, people met on the battlefield… face to face. You had to look a guy in the eye before you shot him, stabbed him, or torched him. That’s how it had to be, because we didn’t have any alternatives.

But now, we don’t even need to send in ground troops if we don’t feel like it. We have stealth bombers, apache helicopters, and smart bombs. We can even shoot down our enemy’s missiles. For all intents and purposes, we’re invincible. Those are just our “little” weapons, and if they don’t work, we have enough nukes to blow up the entire world about 64 times.

The terrorists are facing us the only way they can. They’re sneaking around blowing stuff up. Granted, they’re targeting civilians and we’re trying not to kill any civilians. So, why is world opinion against us? Why does most of Europe and the entire DNC think we deserve what we’re getting?

It’s because we could crush the terrorists, along with about a jillion civilians, with nothing more than the push of a button. We don’t have to send our boys into harms way. We have the power, we have the technology.

We’re afraid to use it, because the mere fact that we have the power means people will always see us as a bully, throwing our weight around.

If Europe experienced 10% of what the terrorists did on 9/11, their entire liberal way of life would screech to a halt.

I’m tired of the sissy, liberal, “we can’t offend the sissy Europeans” attitude here in our country. Let’s stop being ashamed of our power. Let’s stop feeling guilty that we’re the dominant global influence. We can and should use our power to better the lives of Americans, and we should do it even at the expense of other countries.

You can be SURE that if Iran had our power, they’d use it. Don’t believe me? Just wait.

You’re absolutely right. Recently i read about a meeting of Taliban where there were 190 people all gathered together and we didn’t bomb them because they were at a funeral and it’s not US policy to bomb cemetaries. The jist of the article was: “Why the hell are we taking the high ground? It’s only perpetuating the war and eventually we’re going to have to get our hands dirty.”
We need to stop being so morally superior to our enemy…the enemy that uses our own rules against us. Hopefully we don’t realize this too late, you know, when our grandkids are still fighting the same war…this is what the greatest generation realized very early on. They made those sacrifices so we wouldn’t have to. We can’t repay them, but we can pay it forward to our children.

Shame, shame, shame on you for such an ethnocentric viewpoint! Was America solely responsible for “winning” both of the world wars? I could have sworn there was British and European involvement. Are you also conveniently forgetting all of the terrorist activity and bombings in Europe and the UK over the past 40+ years? Do you think the hundreds of English and European people who also died in 9/11 were insignificant? What about those killed/injured in the London subway bombings? How about those jolly old IRA folks who have killed and maimed so many civilians in England and Ireland? Or are some Americans still happily romanticising the IRA as freedom-fighters rather than the (mostly) American-financed terrorists that they really are?

As an Irish-American, I can say that the IRA have every right to rid themselves of the British oppression and occupation they suffered for 800 long years.

As for the Europeans in WWII, had we not come in and saved the day, the British would all be speaking German today. And I say that as a Yank, whose country was established by soundly whipping the organized British army using nothing but farm implements.

Ethnocentric? Of course. Ashamed of it? Hell no.

PS – 9/11 took more lives than all of the terrorist acts in Europe in the past 200 years, so no, I don’t think they have truely been tested yet.

    1. You are American, not “Irish-American”. You were not born in Ireland, raised in Ireland, educated in Ireland, etc. etc. etc. If you are so proud of being an American, why try to give yourself an add-on lineage? I fully agree that the British should remove their troops, but it is the Irish citisenry that wishes them to stay, NOT the terrorist group known as the IRA. What, pray tell, would you think would happen were the country to be turned over to the IRA terrorists? Think about that before you choose whether or not to answer.

    2. America did not “save the day”. Try going back and studying history from a world-view standpoint sometime. You might be amazed to discover that President Franklin was adamantly opposed to giving any aid to the allies and was 100% pro-Japanese until Pearl Harbour forced his hand. I was listening to an amazingly interesting programme on NPR about all of the myths associated with WW2 recently.

    3. Whose land was this anyway before OUR ancestors came along and slaughtered the indigent peoples wholesale? The alleged “civil war” with England only turned out that way because the British were busy defeating Napoleon in Europe. Otherwise you’d be speaking bad French instead of the bad English you presently stammer out. Remember, the language is called “English”… Remember too, if you can, that England has been a staunch ally and defender of America throughout.

    4. Do you honestly feel that the NUMBER of people who die is more important than the mere fact that innocent people were killed? Or their nationality?

In not recognising the rights and cultures of other countries, you are basically portraying yourself as a dictator. Let’s face it, given the choice America would convert the entire world to its political/religious system(s).

I think that is all the debate energy I have in me for today … carry on. 😉

I agree and disagree with you, as usual.

First, I’m the first to say that hyphenated citizens are ridiculous, and I used one just to make a funny and ridiculous point.

Second, had American not nuked Japan, we might ALL be speaking German.

Third, the Brits plan for world dominance via colonialism was at best a fiasco and at worst an immoral travesty. Just as America’s foreign policy encourages terrorism here, England’s foreign policy caused the thing with the IRA. As it turns out, even if many people like having their country interfered with, there will always be a contingent of people who resent it.

I think the main point of my entry was, either a war is worth winning or it isn’t. If we think it’s worth winning, we should stop pussy-footing around and just end the damn thing, world opinion be damned. If it’s not worth winning, then we should pack up our toys and come home.

    End of story.

LOL. I managed to get my OWN comment sent to moderation… Apparently I said something offensive.

    Nope, just the white Christians.

Where’ve I been? What happened to chaostraffic???

  10. September 20, 2006 at 2:46 pm

Yah, I agree with your point: let’s quit playing and end the stupid war. I vote for the nuke method. I also agree with your point that if the decision was in the hands of Iran there would be no doubt as to the outcome.

    So there.

Dangit, I hate it when we agree on stuff! lol

Mental, I tried to email HRT, but no dice. He’s kevorkianed his site.

I hope that the Iraqis do get and use the bomb! I am dead serious when I say we need to start over from the single cell organism. Fuck this planet, fuck Washington, fuck the war, fuck it all. Just start bombing already at least then I wouldn’t be bored, and I would have better targets to shoot at than deer and turkeys.
