Rock Chalk Jayhawk, KU!

So, I didn’t actually go to KU. I mean, I’ve “been” to KU a million times, but I didn’t attend school there. In high school I was a finalist at the KU science symposium (go figure) so I got to go up there for that a couple of times. I really thought I’d go there, so much so that I actually bought a bunch of KU crap like shirts and a keychain and such.

All 3 of my siblings went to KU. I have a sister who got her Master’s and started her Ph.D. there before moving to Boston to finish it. I have a brother who got his BA there, and my younger sister is doing some super freaky program with which she’ll ultimately end up with a Ph.D. in something called “genetic counseling.” Yikers. Hopefully she’ll counsel all of the ugly people in Kansas NOT to procreate.

My parents and I, however, all attended Missouri University schools.

Still, it’s the “home team” in Kansas City. MU is in Columbia, MO, which is a couple hours away. Lawrence is 20 minutes from my house. So, we cheer for KU here. And boy did they give us something to cheer about last night!! I admit, I’m a fair-weather KU fan. I don’t watch any college sports until the playoffs. With college football, I don’t start watching until Thanksgiving. With college basketball, I don’t start watching until the Sweet 16.

However, this was the first Kansas sporting event of ANY kind that’s been worth cheering for since, well… 1985 when the Royals won the world series. The Chiefs have been ALMOST awesome for a bunch of years before they fell apart, but they never made it far enough into the playoffs to really matter. It’s sad, because the NFL is really my favorite sport to watch.

Anyhow, in the immortal words of the KU chant:

Rock .. . . . . . Chalk . . . . . . . . Jay……… . . . . Hawk . . . . . . K . . .. U. . .. .

Rock .. . . . . . Chalk . . . . . . . . Jay……… . . . . Hawk . . . . . . K . . .. U. . .. .

Rock .. . . . . . Chalk . . . . . . . . Jay……… . . . . Hawk . . . . . . K . . .. U. . .. .
Rock .. . . . . . Chalk . . . . . . . . Jay……… . . . . Hawk . . . . . . K . . .. U. . .. .
Rock . . . Chalk . . . Jay . . . Hawk . . . K . . U.
Rock . Chalk . Jay. Hawk . K. U
Rock Chalk Jayhawk
Rock Chalk Jayhawk
Rock Chalk Jayhawk
Rock Chalk Jayhawk… KU!!!

Don’t you know your Jayhawk history?

First of all, BASKETBALL was INVENTED at KU. Literally.

Lawrence was a quarry town back in the early days of KU, and the limestone that was quarried there was called “chalk rock” because of it’s powdery characteristics.

A professor at KU wanted a chant for the basketball team… it started out as Rah Rah Jayhawk, KU, but evolved into Rock Chalk Jayhawk over the first few years.

    …it’s still kind of dumb.

But congratulations nevertheless! I was kind of pulling for the Jayhawks because I’m a fan of Danny Manning and the 1988 Kansas team that won the title that year. I think that was only about the 2nd or 3rd year that I really started paying attention to college basketball.

    So Cheers to you flatlanders!

Not being from Kansas I was completely bored with the entire KU thing. Then, on Saturday, rather than going to a friends wedding reception my husband and I went out to watch the final four game.

I officially have KU fever! Whoo hoo!
