All White People Look Alike

It is frequently pointed out to me that I’m terrible at remembering what face goes with what name. It’s especially apparent with actors in movies and tv shows. I always have to ask who it is. I have no ability to connect the face with the name. I can remember the names of actors, and I remember the faces, just can’t match them.

However, I can tell actors of non-white persuasion apart no problem. Samuel L. Jackson, Wesley Snipes, Denzel Washington – all very different looking. I’ve decided it must be that all white people look alike. It couldn’t be something wrong with me…

If a person changes something (hair, makeup, etc.) I can no longer recognize them. If I meet someone out of context, I can’t recognize them (i.e. seeing a church person at work). But again, this isn’t true of people of non-white persuasion.

I wonder if this is some sort of internal fear of offending a minority or being called a racist. I pay extra attention to visual cues…? Or maybe it’s just that the number of minority people I know is limited thus making it easier to remember all of them…

Does this mean I’m racist against white people?

Maybe it’s because white people have no rhythm. Or because we’re all boring, you know: white bread, vanilla, etc.
