500

Today I celebrate my 500th post. That works out to just over 10 posts a month since I started in June of 2004. That’s not bad, all things considered. I was on Diaryland for 10 months before I sought alternate hosting due to Andrew’s bungling and the constant crashing. The rest, as they say, is history.

It’s hard to believe, in retrospect, just how much has occurred on/because of/during the course of this blog. In early 2004, a friend of mine at my old job asked me if I’d ever heard of blogging, and I hadn’t. It sounded stupid, so I didn’t even look into at the time.

Then one fateful day around April of 04, “Lynne” forwarded me the 10 Worst Album Covers of All Time. Of course, I thought it was very funny (and I was working nights and unbearably bored) so I started reading Dusty’s archives. They were funny, too.

I started lurking on his site, commenting occasionally on a post, and then other readers started commenting back – to me! Thea, Wendy, HRT and Jackie were some of the first, and then this girl who called herself Anisettekiss.

In my boredom, I started believing that maybe I could write well enough to start my own blog. (of course, I was mistaken about my writing ability). But, with foolish optimism and a tongue-in-cheek style, I began my Diaryland blog June 2nd, 2004. I had a couple of people read that first few posts, but then, the infamous Catfight betwen Ms. Right and Jennyanydots on my comments propelled me to superstardom. If by “superstardom” I mean “now 20 people read instead of 3”.

I began receiving anonymous hate mail and comments because some people were too stupid to realize I was being funny and ironic with my posts and they got their panties in a bunch. I always thought it was humorous when someone would send me an email that essentially said “you are pathetic because you write this crap” when they were taking the time to read and respond to what I wrote, and were too chicken to say who they were.

But, the hate mail and comments continued to increase the traffic on the blog, because there’s no such thing as bad publicity.

When I left Diaryland, I was concerned that no one would follow and continue reading, but a lot of people did. One of them was Anisettekiss, who was stalking me quietly but rarely actively participating in the discussion. Then one fateful day in early 2005, she started flirting with me. Hard.

Well, one thing led to another, and before you know it I was on a plane to Philadelphia (via Dallas) to meet her, and three months later she moved to Kansas. Little did “Lynne” know when she forwarded that email to me it would lead to me finding a wife!

But anyhow, I’ve been fortunate to maintain a pretty decent readership over the years. There are a faithful few, however, that have really made this experience a great one, and they deserve some link love (in order of when we met): Pork Tornado, MeanMommy, Wendy, Wilberteets, Warcrygirl, YeahImaDork, Rik, Mental, Walker, Texas Ranger, HRT, Juddhole, Cardigan, Rachel (Site Anonymous), Nogooddaddy, Nightmare, Hairburner, Danjerus, and xquzme. You’ll just have to ignore the fact that some of these people haven’t updated since 2006.

Thanks to everyone for making this such a fun experience, and here’s to the next 500!
